The Mentor-Mentee Relationship

I was being really hard on myself with a project I am leading. I didn’t feel like I was contributing enough, putting in enough time. It was affecting my mood and mindset, overflowing into other areas of my life. Then I talked with my mentor about it and began to feel some relief. He told me that “sometimes leadership is just about getting the right people involved on a project and encouraging them.” He was right. I was accustomed to being the one who took on the heavy load and having a role in all aspects. To delegate and step back is not easy for me, but that is what leadership is all about; the leader can’t be involved in everything and must allow the team to do their part.

Sometimes leadership is just about getting the right people involved on a project and encouraging them.

Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to help you through your struggles. That perspective could come from a spouse or friend, a therapist, or someone who has been in your shoes. Don’t be too proud to seek help.
